Home Ownership Requires Ongoing Property Maintenance
Homeownership requires ongoing property maintenance, and there are some tasks you will have to repeat month after month. Here are 5 monthly home maintenance chores to stay on top of to keep your house running smoothly.
CLEANING MONTHLY HOME MAINTENANCE TASKS
You should clean your home more than once per month to remove allergens and prevent mold. Some of the deep-cleaning tasks, like scrubbing vent covers and vacuuming refrigerator coils, only need to be completed once each month.
Put one deep-cleaning day per month on your home maintenance calendar. You will help your appliances last longer and improve indoor air quality by sticking to a regular deep-cleaning schedule.
TEST SMOKE ALARMS
Smoke alarms are critical to warn your family in the case of a house fire, but they won’t do any good if they are not operational. Every month press the test buttons on all the devices in your home to make sure they sound. Even if they all work, change the batteries every 6 months as an extra precaution.
Devices like air purifiers, exhaust fans, vacuums, and heating and air conditioning systems all have filters that must be replaced periodically. Most of these filters should be changed monthly, but some HVAC systems specify to change the filter every 3 or 6 months. Consult the manuals on all filter-containing devices and mark your calendar to remember to change them on time.
CHECK FOR LEAKS
Common areas for water leaks include the attic, the basement, the kitchen, and the bathroom. Check these areas monthly for moisture, look for water stains on the walls and ceiling, and take note of any mildew odors. Staying alert to signs of leaks will help you catch them earlier and reduce damage.
MONTHLY HOME MAINTENANCE FOR THE EXTERIOR
Every month walk around the perimeter of the house and look for anything unusual. Check the foundation for cracks and vegetation growth, look at the condition of the roof and inspect the siding, windows, and doors. If you find something that looks off, contact a professional to diagnose and repair the issue.
